Guang R. Gao received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Tsinghua University in 1968, his M.S. and Ph. D. degrees in computer science from MIT in 1982 and 1986, respectively. Currently, he is a Named Professor Emeritus at the ECE Department of University of Delaware, Newark, the founding director of Computer Architecture and Parallel System Laboratory (CAPSL). Dr. Gao has been a endowed visiting professor at Tsinghua University and a Visiting Professor for several top Chinese Universities.

Dr. Gao’s research interests include high-performance computing and dataflow models, computer architecture and systems, compiler technology and runtime systems, program analysis, mapping and optimization under dataflow moels. Dr. Gao has been a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator of a number of high-impact research projects in Parallel Computing sponsored by the National Science Foundation, DARPA, DOE, DOD and other US and Canadian government agencies.

He was elected to an IEEE Fellow in 2007 and ACM Fellow in 2007. He is the recipient of the 2017 IEEE Computer Society (CS) B. Ramakrishna Rau Technical Award “For contributions to compiler techniques and microarchitectures for instruction-level and thread-level parallel computing.”

Dr. Gao has been a Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator of a number of high-impact research projects in Parallel Computing sponsored by the National Science Foundation, DARPA, DOE, DOD and other US and Canadian government agencies.

Dr. Gao has graduated over 30 PhD students and mentored over 25 postdoctoral fellows. A number of them have been faculty members in research universities world wide. Several of them have been founders or co-founders of startups in US and overseas originated or inspired partly from ideas in their Ph.D studies and/or from their joint work influenced by Gao. Others have been in key R&D, engineering or management positions in various government and private engineering organization related to the information technologies, such as US national laboratories, or Chinese Academy of Science research institutes, and companies such as Google, HP, IBM, Intel, QualComm, Cray, SGI, Huawei, ST Micro, Synopsys, etc., as well as in a number of startup companies.

Dr. Gao has over 300 publications in these areas, including several best paper awards in reputable peer-reviewed international conferences and workshops.

Dr. Gao has initiated several top international conferences and workshops, as well as has served as a member of program/steering/organization committees in many reputable international conferences and workshops (e.g. HPCA, MICRO, PACT, PLDI, PPoPP, SC, CF, ICS, IPDPS, MICRO, EuroPar, CASES etc. – Most have sponsorship from top professional organizations, such as ACM, IEEE/CS, IFIP, etc.) . He has been a founding member of PACT: ACM/IEEE International Conference on Parallel Architectures and Compilation Techniques and served as the Program Committee Chair for PACT 1994 in Montreal where the PACT Conference is inaugurated. PACT is now a top conference in this domain world wide. Gao also co-founded the CASES: Intrnational Conference on Compilers, Architecture, and Synthesis for Embedded Systems in 2000 – now a prestigious meeting series in the field of embedded systems. Gao is a founder and chairman of the IEEE/CS Dataflow STC – the Special Interested Community of Parallel Model and System: Dataflow and Beyond. Gao has chaired the SISA Workshop held in Japan in 2017– This was the first international meeting Dataflow STC has engaged and supported.

Gao has been a keynote speaker/invited speaker in a large number of international meetings, as well as member of the editorial boards of several international journals.

The legacy of Gao’s work has also been associated with his entrepreneur effort applying his dataflow R&D results for real world applications through ETI (ET International Inc.). A unique achievement of Gao’s team at ETI is its critical role in the now legendary supercomputing system project – funded by DoD and IBM - known as IBM Cyclops-64 Supercomputer . The success on Cyclops64 supercomputer is recognized by the selection of ETI as a winner of a Supercomputing disruptive technology award in Supercomputing Conference (SC-2007) as one of the largest supercomputer build on many-core chip technology at that time and in production use in real world.
